So after reloading the server for the umtenth time, this time it has stayed up and is now receiving mail from others.

I removed the smart host (smtp.gmail.com) and can now send mail to other servers, but still can't send anything to gmail ... all messages to gmail just get queued - I don't see any failure messages for gmail in the logs
