Hi,

Installation Xeams and QmailAgent in Qnap NAS was succesful, but can't get emails. Something wrong with MX records or SMTP configuration.

What means Xeams recommendation on site - Add an MX record in your DNS server pointing to the external IP address of this installation machine. If I give MX address my domain name, then DNS server gives error message - Cannot create a connection with ******.ee SMTP port

What I must change in server configuration file?

Regards

Raul

Raul,

If there is a problem with your MX record, no configuration in Xeams will be able to fix it. I recommend you call your DNS provider and ask them the correct syntax their interface expects for an MX record.

Before you add an MX record, you will have to enter an A record. For example:

mail A 12.34.56.78

Once an A record is done, you would add an MX, for example:

@ MX 10 mail.yourDomain.com.

Hi,

Thank your for answer. I can myself change in DNS server A and MX records. Before I send question my A record was public IP and and MX 10 and MX 20 was just "mydomain.com". I changed it now by your suggest "mail.mydomain.com" but occurs error message -

The domain name "mail.mydomain.com" cannot be resolved as an IP address

it seems that there is need to change or add some values in Xeams server. Can your suggest something more?

Regards

Did you add an A record for mail.mydomain.com ?

Once you're done adding both A and MX records, you should be able to run the following commands from any computer:

nslookup mail.mydomain.com

AND

nslookup -q=mx mydomain.com

The first command should return the public IP address of your network. The second command should return mail.mydomain.com.

Hi, here screenshot from DNS server provider

nslookup commands shows information about domain name, address, nameserver, but server name is unknown.

Two suggestions:

  1. Try putting a dot at the end of your MX value. It should be mail.xxxxxx.ee. (a dot after ee). if this does not work, just put "mail" (without any dots) and see if that works.
  2. There is no point in having two MX referring to the same host. You might as well only use one value. Although have two records with same value should not result in an error - it's just redundant.

If the first suggestion (both variations) does not work, you need to contact the company that provides DNS service and ask them what is wrong.

Hi,

Thanks, seems like MX record just "mail" works (changing it didn't give error code). Contacting with DNS service provider wasn't succesful, they want sell theirs mail server:)

But something missing or is wrong in Xeams server configuration. Is it correct that servers hostname in user editor is my public IP without port number? In Qmail Agent are local nas IP addresses, but now show mail sending smtp error code 250

In youtube is special video about installing to Qnap Xeams mail server, but it wasn't help anymore... Any comments more, please.

You QNAP server is most likely running behind a NAT - meaning it will have a local IP address like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. Therefore, you will have to open the ports in your firewall to allow incoming traffic for port 25 to come to your QNAP server. Once port forwarding is done on your firewall, servers on the Internet will:

  • Resolve the public IP address of your domain by querying the MX and then the A record
  • They will try connecting to port 25 on your public IP address
  • Your firewall will take that request and forward it to port 25 on your LAN IP where QNAP is running

Hi,

I already did port forwarding in router for NAS in port 5272 and I can operate it over internet. Adding port forwarding for port 25 didn't change mail sending over internet.

I get error message in outlook- Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name="mail.domain.ee" type=A: Host not found

Question is, what server's host name i must give in Xeams users editor that DNS servers MX record recognize?

You should use "mail.domain.ee" in the User Editor. However, that value is not related to the current problem. If your Outlook is not able to resolve mail.domain.ee, the problem is not in Xeams. Problem is that your DNS server (the one Outlook is using) is not able to resolve the name.

I recommend you post your actual host name on the forum. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, send us an email instead with your real domain name. We can run some tests from our end to confirm if the values are entered correctly in your DNS server.

After several reinstalling and installing Xeams and QmailAgent seems thats meil sending and recieving problem disappears. Thank you for advices. But this is true, that when I make same account to Outlook, mail sending and recieving problem occurs again. Something in outlook mix up QmailAgent work.

Raul,

What is the purpose of using QMailAgent? You should be able to connect your Outlook directly to Xeams using either IMAP or POP3.
